A year ago, Apple took a detour in the traditional way that had been following since the iPhone 6. That exit, the closest thing to leave the highway and go through the toll (seen the price), was called iPhone X. It was clear that to be the main route that those of Cupertino was going to follow in the coming courses. And both the iPhone Xs and the iPhone Xs Max bear witness, which have been incorporated into the brand’s offer as the highest representatives of the catalog. Two spearheads that drink directly from the model that saw the light last year. If that was a revolution, this is a logical evolution: make the canons of the original iPhone X majority.
Apple has not changed its strategy. It is the play to which we have been accustomed. Only the nomenclature of the second member of the tandem has changed. You have set aside the ‘Plus’ and replaced it with ‘Max’. Regardless of whether it supposes gas for the “prophets” of “this did not happen with Steve Jobs”, so addicted to sterile debates, it is nothing more than a simple change of name. Nothing else. We return to see a model of more contained size, 5.8 inches, and another something more hormone, 6.5 inches. In the same way, we saw it with the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus (and with the 7, the 6S and the 6). But now the duo is made up of the iPhone XS and the iPhone Xs Max.
The iPhone Xs keeps the size that we saw on the iPhone X. Now it simply repeats itself. The resolution of this most content model is 2,436 by 1,125, which means a density of 438 PPI. Where the comparison is interesting is in the iPhone XS Max. It has almost the same size as the iPhone Plus, but its borderless design, with ‘notch’, allows one more inch to be added to the equation.
The screen density is the same in the ‘hormone’ model. And that is achieved thanks to a resolution of 2.688×1.242 pixels. In both cases, it is compatible with HDR 10 and Dolby Vision.
Design and Face ID
Let’s talk about what they have in common. Beyond their differences in size, they share the same ingredients when we talk about design and screen. On the one hand, the main ingredient of its shell is tempered glass. The frame repeats with aluminum. And the screen, in both cases, is an OLED panel. Traditional LCDs are relegated to the more ‘basic’ model but also cheaper.
Both terminals are IP68 certified and do not require the fingerprint reader in favour of Face ID
These are two terminals with IP68 certification, that is, the maximum resistance to dust and water that is currently used in the guild. In both cases, the physical button for the fingerprint reader disappears. Biometrics runs hand in hand with Face ID, the facial recognition system that premiered last year. A system is hidden in the tab that presides over the front, a mechanism that also enables the ‘animojis’ and, now, the ‘memojis’.
A prime mover
The engine of these new terminals will be the A12 Bionic, built for the first time with the architecture of seven nanometers. If the A11 chip carried out 600,000 million operations per second, this processor makes 5,000 billion in that same time, thanks to the 6.9 billion transistors it incorporates. All this is marked with an internally developed GPU, which they claim is 50% faster than the original iPhone X. The result, as promised from Apple, more performance and, above all, energy efficiency.
The A12 Bionic promises plenty of power. The 512 GB model also promises enough memory
It will arrive in three models in what refers to capacity: 64, 256 and 512 GB of memory. Something logical to increase the maximum capacity, seen the cravat that had been launched from its most staunch enemy, Samsung, with Note 9. The colors will be black, silver and gold, the new color. You can not expand memory by microSD but, to compensate, finally, the iPhone will be Dual SIM. Yes, with a little trick. One will be eSIM and the other normal SIM. Only in China, there will be double physical SIM. On the battery, they have not given concrete figures. Only comparatives The XS will have 30 minutes more autonomy than the original X and the XS Max will increase that time up to 90 minutes.
The iPhone cameras have always enjoyed good health and popularity. He went up quite a lot thanks to his reinterpretation of the ‘portrait mode’, which Huawei had previously released. But in the last year, the competition has advanced (and much) in this aspect. That’s why I played a step forward. And here there were two options: the ‘hardware’ or the ‘software’. Those of Cupertino have chosen to keep the camera double and not get tangled in putting a triple camera or anything like that. Renew the sensors, but stay true to the formula that has worked to this day.
It has been focused on the ‘software’ improvements. It is the ‘via Google’, which with a single sensor in its Pixel 2XL remains one of the most outstanding cameras of the course.
They have renewed the sensors of the camera, but they have preferred to pass of stridencies of triple sensor
The ‘portrait mode’ has been improved. The ‘bokeh’ effect can be adjusted once you take the picture. That is, you can define the depth of field after the shot. For the rest, they claim that they take advantage of the full power of the A12’s neuronal processing for faster, more intelligent and more accurate captures thanks to the advanced depth segmentation. It will have to be seen in person, but what is shown in the presentation promises.
One of the things that have put more emphasis is the ‘Intelligent HDR’, which promises a higher dynamic range in the most complicated images and even ‘save’ the photos with great backlight. In the video recording, also good news. Improvements in HDR and stereo sound recording.
In the technical aspect, we meet again with the same recipe. Two sensors, one wide angle and another telephoto. Both 12 megapixels. The first has a focal aperture of f / 1.6 and pixels of 1.4 microns in size. The secondary, which offers an optical zoom of two magnifications, also has image stabilization and f / 2.4 aperture.
