- The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have been leaked dozens of times before their official announcement, which took place today between New York and London.
- Among its outstanding features, a camera above the competition and a ‘notch’ so big that scares.
We all knew how the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL would look before its official presentation, which took place today, October 9, at an event in New York. And yes, the bet of Google for its new devices we like, because the Pixel 2 XL still has one of the best cameras on the market; but it is a pity that they were not a surprise. Google has taken it a bit as a joke.
That they have fitted the blows received in advance in a good mood is fine, because the questionable design of the Pixel 3 XL has given a lot to talk about. As much as his recent Google Plus hack, his failed social network. The company has taken advantage of the start of the presentation of the phones to ensure that their platforms are secure, that the information of the users is theirs and they can do whatever they want with it and that there is nothing to fear. But they have not been slow to present their new devices, which is what we have come to.
The giant notch of the Pixel 3 XL is real and has given and will continue to talk and its cameras seem as good as expected, although it seems that the competition is catching up very quickly. Sales, market penetration or If it is “Google’s iPhone”, we better not talk, although Spain will receive both models this year, and not just one. Both Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will be released on November 2 and may be reserved ahead of time in the Google Play Store.
The same concept for two Pixel 3
Like last year, Google has decided that the two phones are practically the same, with the only difference of the size of the screen and the battery. If this strategy thought that Apple invented this year with the iPhone Xs, it is not the case, because it is not even something original that Google has done.
The materials have changed, yes. Since the phone has wireless charging, the metal behind it has been replaced by a hardened glass. Distills a more premium feeling than its predecessor, something that was criticized enough in his day.
Both share the same design line, with a dry cut under the camera and above the fingerprint reader, something that makes them easy to identify. On the front, the Pixel 3 has a P-OLED panel of 5.4 inches in 18: 9 format with FHD + resolution while the Pixel 3 XL has a 6.2-inch P-OLED screen in 19: 9 format and QHD + resolution.
And the first has a battery of 3,000 mAh, which rise to 3,470 mAh in the second. Put another way, they should last a whole day if you do not burn them watching series on Netflix or playing Fortnite.
The larger model also has an OLED screen with a ‘notch’ that extends the screen by the space in which the smaller phone has a frame, but both have front stereo speakers. If you like symmetrical and small phones, you have an option to choose from.
Colors, like last year, have comical little names that point to perhaps too elaborate appellations of the competition. The Pixel 3 come in ‘Just Black’, ‘Clearly White’ and ‘Not Pink, or’ only black ‘,’ clearly white ‘and’ non-pink ‘. The latter comes to replace the pastel blue of the Pixel 2 XLEn inside, both Pixel 3 carry 4GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 845 processor and 64GB of internal storage, which can increase to 128GB if you pay a little more.
Nothing to expand them with microSD cards and there is no support for dual SIM. For not having, it has no jack for headphones. The prices, with a date yet to be confirmed in Spain, start at 849 euros for the standard Pixel 3 and 959 euros for the Pixel 3 XL, both in the 64GB configuration. Both carry the purest and, in my opinion, a perfect version of the Google operating system. With Android 9 Pie, the Pixel 3 can boast of being in the latest stable version of the operating system and that they will receive updates at the same time that Google makes them available to the user. Just missing.
From my experience with the Pixel 2 XL, this is a double-edged sword. Although some features of Android’s custom layers are missing (such as the screenshot in ‘scroll’ of the Samsung and Huawei), the mobiles simply go better, very fluid and with a much more restrained battery consumption. The Pixel 2 XL, without having a huge battery, lasted as long as 4,000mAh phones.
But if these phones have to stand out in something is not to continue to have a fingerprint reader in the back or to introduce wireless charging (with its own base, the Google Stand) or better resistance to water and dust: the rear camera is the key, that this year comes with a new strategy for the front.
A camera to dominate them all
The Pixel 3 live by their cameras. And not because they have more resolution than others, but because of the software and the processing that Google does of the captured images. The rear camera, because there is only one, is 12.2 megapixels, while the front, where there is a double camera, is 8.1 megapixels.
There are few who consider that the Pixel 2 XL makes better photos than the new iPhone Xs (I confirm myself), so how do the ‘eyes’ of the Pixel 3? It seems that Google again bet on a natural image without saturating, with a simple filter that does not sharpen too much the images and that also does not hide the imperfections of the faces.
Those who prefer beauty filters, look elsewhere. It is ironic that there is a double camera ahead, but not behind the phone, although let’s be honest: beyond zoom, these double cameras only make sense if they understand how LG does: the main camera and then a wide-angle camera. Just that is what the double front camera of Pixel 3 is about: to make group photos that everyone enters thanks to the secondary lens. Still, with a single rear camera, the Pixel 2 XL already swept the competition in almost every scenario (with the exceptions of the iPhone X, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the Huawei P20 Pro), so repeat a camera’s formula I do not think it’s a bad idea on paper at all.
They have tried to make up for the lack of that ‘telephoto’ of the competition, yes, because Google has developed a system of ‘superzoom’, or Super Res Zoom, which software cleans the noise and improves the digital zoom image of a lifetime, with results superior to the standard extension but which, in a first test, does not seem to match the 5x zoom of the Huawei P20 Pro.
In the same way, a technology that captures the best possible photograph is included, regardless of when you clicked on the button to make it. ‘Top Shot’, it is called, and basically, it takes pictures during the entire time period in which it is aimed to select the appropriate or the best one.
It is something that already allows the iPhone, to some extent. Improvements in the portrait mode, perhaps the best in a mobile that only does it by software, now allow to blur selectively, be it the background or the person that appears; and also cancel the background color and highlight the subject that appears in the foreground.
Like many other manufacturers, the cameras have a close relationship with the machine’s automatic learning systems, with the difference that Google is perhaps the most experienced company in the field of artificial intelligence applied to its products. In other words, the cameras understand very well what you are focusing on and how to process it to make, for example, the noise of a dark image be reduced without damaging too many textures or definition.
Google plans to use this to automatically classify the images that the user uploads to their online libraries, which will be infinite in the highest quality if they upload to Google Photos from a Pixel, be it 3 or 2.
Google keeps trying
Despite being one of the companies that have changed our day to day in the last 20 years, Google has many successes and many failures. We have Gmail or YouTube, but also Google Reader or Google Plus. Where do the Pixels fit if we categorize in this way the way in which Google evolves?
It is difficult to know: they are outstanding products, but that no longer serves to succeed in a market where, yes, your operating system is king and the competition uses it obligatorily; but it takes a lot to highlight, mainly, a lot of work as a brand. The Nexus mobiles failed, in part, because of this.
With Pixel, that the design does not have a good opinion or that the model of last year has had some major failures (the screen, mostly), does not help much, apart from all its many benefits. I am not clear that the Pixel 3 is going to take a prominent place in the short term among the public, even if it has the characteristic that, supposedly, matters most to some of them: an outstanding camera, superior to all in our first impressions.
And yet, I have no doubt that the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL can be amazing to certain consumers and that they will be able to do things that their rivals can not. Regardless of their appearance, it is enough for me to continue being what they are. more than most in the section of the camera and that your software remains fluid, simple and up to date.
Google knows how to do things well and even do new things, as shown by the approach to the photography of their phones. To see if little by little they are refining the asperities that still show their hardware products.
