Almost all smartphones and computers today have a built-in smart assistant. However, each system has its own. Therefore, there are more and more like Siri, Cortana or the Google Assistant and each one has its peculiarities, defects, and strengths.
However, which is the best for you? Well, we know that it is not an easy question to answer since they are so similar that it is difficult to compare them without deepening their capabilities. Having said that, we are going to analyze them and see how they resemble each other and how they are different.
- fluent and accurate speech recognition
- Voice input with dictation function system-wide
- Integration for iOS, macOS, watchOS
- Only for Apple system
- Personalization often only delivers web hits
Siri, Apple’s former pioneer in operating system speech recognition and proactive assistance features, has fallen silent. Although the average usage time of Apple’s voice system is about three minutes per day, according to a study by Verto Analytics, while Google’s voice assistant comes just half the time of use. However, compared to the last analysis Siri loses in the user favour.
Siri is only available on Apple devices; there are no cross-system apps and no web interface. The voice control of smart home devices is old hat for Siri. However, the interface is limited to a few products whose manufacturers have licensed Apple’s restrictive HomeKit. High costs and a complicated test procedure make many device manufacturers renounce the HomeKit certificate. A free and exceptionally flexible interface to third-party devices like the Alexa Skills is missing Siri. The network speaker HomePod, which was announced at the end of the year, will not change this. Although it is equipped with Siri, but should primarily serve for listening to music.
As a unique feature, Siri scores points with an excellent dictation function: a press of the microphone on the on-screen keyboard, and you can speak system-wide text instead of typing it.
When comparing Siri on the iPhone 7 and Google Assistant in the English pre-release version on the Galaxy S8, it shows that the Apple helper lacks in skill, because he does not notice requests. If you are looking for the best-known songs of a band and would like to have more titles displayed, Siri will say “I do not understand, unfortunately.” Unlike Google Assistant, the Apple helper has no clear short-term memory that links together chronological instructions for conclusive results. Compared to Google, Siri’s response logic also falls by a smaller database in the behind: Apple cannot access the full range of user analysis from the numerous Google services.
Conclusion: On the iPhone, iPad, Mac and for users of HomeKit devices Siri is the best choice. Siri has no advantages for Windows users and non-HomeKit-compatible, smart home hardware users.
- fast response speed
- adapts to the user
- compatible with Philips Hue, Nest, WeMo and others
- no app planned for Windows
- Optimal only on pixel phones
- Hardly any privacy due to intensive data analysis
Google Assistant is Google’s new key technology for personalized user assistance. The search engine giant will now also simplify the smartphone PC with its smartphones, tablets, smart household appliances and bicycles with the refreshed successor of Google. It should not matter if you speak or type, there is supported by Assistant.
Currently, Assistant is in the Android showcase Google Pixel, can be set up on newer Android smartphones and drives announced at the end of the year network speaker Google Home. The latter is to make Amazon Echo, Dot and Alexa the place as a smart home controller in the living room dispute and is about action skills expandable. In some languages, the Assistant service is currently only limited to the Messenger Google Allo for Android and iOS available. At least here in iOS, you have to do without the close integration with the operating system, which distinguishes Assistant on the Pixel phone. A practical web frontend for the browser, as Alexa offers, Google has not provided.
The Capital of the Google Group Alphabet is the detailed knowledge of the habits of its users gathered through continuous tracking. Whatever you are looking for, accessing or sharing through a Google product will feed into your data profile. This forms together with public sources such as Wikipedia the database of the assistant, who profits from its fast search parser. Thus, the Google Helper answers knowledge questions, conversions, route information and PoI searches nimble, accurate, sometimes predictive and often more personalized than Cortana or Siri. In Allo, however, this applies only to a limited extent, because here Assistant usually stingy with detailed answers, which should be due to the specific orientation as a chat helper. Among the issues, Google shows action buttons, with which you can quickly call up further information or corresponding commands.
Consistent and advantageous for PC users would be if Google would bring the assistant despite the direct competition to Cortana as a language helper on the desktop – at least in the form of a universal web app, as Amazon offers for Alexa.
Conclusion: Google’s core competence is answering questions with matching search results – the assistant shows up smartly under Android. Windows users are left out.
Samsung has already tried on a language assistant with the now discontinued S Voice, now sends the South Korean company Bixby into the race. For the first time on the smartphone flagship Galaxy S8 / S8 + as one of the top innovations preinstalled digital assistant can be activated via its button on the housing, also observes inputs on the on-screen keyboard, finger taps in apps and images that you take with the camera.
Depending on what you are doing with your device, Bixby offers location and time-based content, suggests actions, and learns from user’s behavior. The system can also refer to functions within apps that have to be specially adapted to Bixby.
Bixby is still not very focused on the Internet of Things but has excellent control over everything you do on your Samsung device.

WHICH ASSISTANT IS THE BEST?
In general, we give the Google assistant an excellent grade. Although we believe that both Google and Siri are the best current bets for people who want a single assistant to do everything, Bixby, however, is a worthy assistant to keep an eye on.
